How To Beat First Week Jitters

- Set alarms for all of your classes–Set them on your phone, write them down, and don’t forget to copy your schedule!
- Have a healthy breakfast–Not only will you be energized, but you will be more motivated and will stay focused for those long hours of lectures.
- Go to all of your classes–If you are unsure of where a classroom is, ask someone. Chances are, there’s bound to be a handful of people who do know.
- Go through your syllabi for all of your classes– Review your assignments, materials, and make note of things you are unclear about. Ask your professors questions if there is something on there that you are confused about. They are here to help you and it is a good idea to ask your questions early so you don’t fall behind.
- If, by chance, you don’t understand something on your homework, make note of it and be prepared to ask questions the next time you have your class. Seek out your professor whether it’s via email or catching them during their office hours. They’ll appreciate your advocacy.
- Talk to people in your class– Be friendly, get at least two peoples’ phone numbers in case you are absent in the future and need to know what to do for an assignment. Your future self will thank you later.
- Create a good sleeping schedule– It’s easy to feel anxious when you have class the next day but take a few deep breaths and go to bed at a decent hour so you’re not falling asleep during the day.
- Meet up with friends– Talk about your day, go for lunch or dinner, ask if they’ve taken the course, ask for advice.
- Remind yourself you are going to be okay– Everybody is going through the same thing you are, so close your eyes, take a long deep breath, and keep moving forward. You got this.
